Submission Guidelines

Format:

• MENA360° articles typically range 1,000 to 1,500 words in length, while Enheduanna blogs range from 800 to 1,200 words. Longer essays may be considered.
• Articles and blogs typically contain a strong, central narrative, usually beginning with a "hook" or anecdote and proceed with multiple, interrelated sections.
• Articles and blogs should conclude with a few recommendations or analytical insight for the reader.
• References are offered as hyperlinks, footnotes are minimized to page references in books or peer reviewed journals.

Style:

• Op-eds and opinion commentary are shorter, condensed, direct arguments from a specific point of view. They must be clearly argued, present an accurate and balanced assessment of the topic, and must debate a specific policy position on a relevant issue. Op-eds may end with strong conclusions or recommendations for decision makers. 
• Descriptive analyses are typically longer and focuses on breaking down complex trends in order to elicit a comprehensive understanding of events. Analyses often conclude with various interpretations of the subject in order to leave the reader better equipped to assess the situation as it develops. 
• Personal narratives published on Enheduanna richly describe important elements and details of the author’s experience. These blogs are typically shorter and cover a range of topics from special projects, causes, commemorations of events, and major socio-political themes. All narrative blogs start with a memoir or experience which expand on the issue.  
• Reactions and commentaries reflect the individual or collected views of relevant experts toward a specific event or critique of a current policy or development. 

Ethics

MEP values submissions above all that ROAR:

• Researched: Submission demonstrates that the author has consulted a wide range of sources and perspectives in the formation of their argument, and information is properly referenced.
• Objective: Analyses and arguments adhere to high standards of honesty and avoid unnecessary bias or prejudice, while wholly rejecting attacks on persons, property, or cultures. 
• Accurate: All sources are verified for truthfulness and are presented without slant or false light. Accuracy and clarity of written English is optimized for maximum effective communication. 
• Relevant: The submission represents timely analysis of events or addresses overlooked, misunderstood, yet strongly consequential trends in the region. 

Timeline:

• Please allow editors up to 1-2 week to review a pitch and 2-3 weeks to offer edits and comments. Exceptions can be made for urgent or timely pieces at the discretion of editorial staff.
• We recommend meeting or discussing your pitch with your editor before you begin drafting copy for print.

Components of a pitch:

• 150-300 words in length
• Clearly stated topic, background/relevance, and position of the argument 
• Short author biography 
• Do not submit a fully drafted copy

Publication rights:

MENA360° and Enheduanna: The Voices of Women from the Middle East articles and blogs are published on the MEP page on the wilsoncenter.org website and are circulated to our email subscribers and social media followers. The Wilson Center owns full rights to all printed copy, and all submissions to MENA360° and Enheduanna must be exclusive to the Wilson Center. We cannot offer any co-publishing opportunities.
