President Jimmy Carter’s Influence in Latin America
Former US President Jimmy Carter turned 100 years old this week. Throughout his life, he has been known to champion democracy and the respect for human rights. For Latin Americans, he is considered a beloved and key figure in the development of US-Latin America relations. He is mostly known for having successfully lobbied Congress in 1977 to pass the Panama Canal Treaty, returning control of the Panama Canal to the Panamanian government by the year 2000.
