Latin American Program Global Fellow Juan Carlos Garzón authored this article for El Faro, in which he discusses the nexus between Salvadoran gangs and drug trafficking. He argues that El Salvador, as a transit country, is less significant than other countries in Central America. He also concludes with the statement that the threat of gangs will remain the crutch to explain violence and crime in El Salvador.
