Museums are repositories of our past. They may also be key to imagining our future. As society grows more diverse there is a need for museums to become more socially active as providers of space for interaction among groups. There is a corresponding need for greater inclusiveness in every aspect of museum life from attendance to the setting of policy. This is the point of view expressed by Elaine Heumann Gurian in her book Civilizing the Museum.
