James Steinberg

James Steinberg currently serves as the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State.  He was dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs from January 2006 to January 2009.  Before which, he was the Vice President and director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution from 2001 to 2005.  He also served as Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bill Clinton from December 1996 to August 2000, during which he also served as the President’s personal representative to the 1998 and 1999 G-8 summits.  Deputy Secretary Steinberg is the author and contributor to many books and articles including Difficult Transitions: Foreign Policy Troubles at the Outset of Power, and An Ever Closer Union: European Integration and Its Implications for the Future U.S.-European Relations.  Deputy Secretary Steinberg received his B.A. from Harvard University and J.D. from Yale Law School.
