Smart Take | Israel at War with Hamas After Surprise Attack on Civilians

October 10, 20232:17

Israel has declared war on Hamas in response to the militant group's unprecedented attack on the country. In the first few days of fighting more than 1,300 people are estimated to have been killed. The dead include at least 800 Israelis and 500 Palestinians. A reported 130 Israelis are being held hostage under threat of execution. Wilson Global Fellow Guy Laron, a Senior Lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reports from Tel Aviv, sharing insights into how Hamas is likely to leverage its many hostages, the likelihood of an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza, and how the war could escalate into a regional or international conflict.
