Alma Alcaraz Hernández is the Sigamos Haciendo Historia en Guanajuato (Let's Continue Making History in Guanajuato) candidate for the governorship of Guanajuato. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1971, she holds a degree in Public Accounting from the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa. She currently belongs to the Morena party.
Alcaraz began her political career in the state of Sinaloa, representing the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) as a local deputy from 1999 until 2001. She then served as the Secretary General of the Sinaloa Directive Committee from 2002 until 2005. Alcaraz represented the PAN as a Sinaloa federal deputy from 2006 until 2009. She also served as the PAN’s state coordinator in Sinaloa in 2006. In 2015, Alcaraz moved to Guanajuato and joined Morena. She was the party’s Secretary General that year, and in 2018, she served as the party's State Leader.
Gender parity rules set by the National Electoral Institute (INE) for the 2024 elections require parties to nominate female candidates for at least five of the nine gubernatorial races. Ricardo Sheffield, another Morena candidate, consistently led the polls in Guanajuato (receiving 19.8% the vote in a Morena survey, with Alcaraz following behind (receiving just 5.5% of the vote). However, given the INE’s gender parity rules, Alcaraz was ultimately selected as Morena’s candidate for the 2024 gubernatorial election in Guanajuato.
