The Nuclear Proliferation International History Project (NPIHP) in partnership with the Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Nuclear History Summer Camp 2025: Hiroshima Special Edition hosted from September 6 to September 16 in Hiroshima, marking 80 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 

 

The nine-day intensive camp is aimed at building a new generation of experts on the international history of the nuclear age. Participants will strengthen their research skills and be immersed in the history of nuclear matters ranging from the evolution of nuclear technology to the origins and development of deterrence theory and nuclear strategy through the historical roots of today’s global nuclear landscape. In this special edition, particular attention will be placed on themes HOPe has been working on, including nuclear disarmament, the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapon use, and security without nuclear deterrence. This will be the twelfth edition of the NPIHP nuclear history summer camp.  

Details 

The 2025 special edition of the Nuclear History Summer Camp will take place in Hiroshima, Japan for nine days, September 6th (arrival in Hirosima) - September 16th (departure from Hiroshima). 

Participants will receive full tuition and round-trip airfare to Hiroshima as well as accommodations and meals during the boot camp. 

Eligibility 

The 2025 Nuclear History Summer Camp is open to: 

  • Students enrolled in or who have been accepted in a Ph.D. program in international history, international relations, political science, and related fields. 
  • Applicants who have completed their M.A. degree and are considering a Ph.D. in any of the above fields will also be considered, especially students who are working towards or considering a thesis on nuclear matters. 
  • Post-doc applications are also welcome from candidates who defended their dissertation no longer than 3 years ago. 
How to Apply 

The application deadline is April 15th. Required application materials include: 

  • A brief resume or CV (maximum 2 pages). 
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor, supervisor or senior professional colleague who knows you well. (Only one letter please) 
  • A brief abstract (maximum 200 words) of your current academic research. 
  • A statement of purpose (limited to 400 words in length) describing how participating in the Nuclear History Boot Camp would contribute to the achievement of your personal, professional or academic goals. 
  • A completed application cover sheet. Please fill out the form using the pdf writing tool.
