¿Quien descubrió el Nuevo Mundo? Todos sabemos la respuesta. Pero no todo el mundo recuerda cuanto le costó a Cristóbal Colón convencer a los dirigentes y la sociedad de su tiempo respecto a su iniciativa.
Sin el apoyo de Genova, Colón buscó el rey de Portugal, que tambien rechazó la atrevida propuesta. ¿Por que explorar nuevos mares, en lugar del floreciente comercio en el Mediterraneo? Mas flexibles, los reyes de España dieron una oportunidad a Cristóbal. Meses mas tarde, en 1492, cuando se enteraron del descubrimiento de las Americas, muchos sectores ibericos reaccionaron con el mismo recelo: ¿Nuevo Mundo? ¿Por que? Fue necesario darle tiempo al tiempo para que se percibiera la nueva realidad.
Actualmente es evidente que los viajes ibericos produjeron una transformación en el mundo al cambiar el centro de gravedad de la economia global del Mediterraneo al Atlantico mediante la proyección de la zona de Occidente. Los poderosos centros comerciales de gran alcance de Italia dieron paso a España y Portugal, que se levantaron con riqueza y esplendor. Poco despues, el naciente capitalismo holandes e ingles hizo del comercio, el principal impulsor de la prosperidad europea.
