The image of America that foreigners have is largely the product of stories published abroad by the corps of foreign correspondents resident in the United States. That corps, now two thousand strong, is a much more diverse group than it was in the mid-twentieth century. It is also strongly influenced by the explosion in broadcast technology in recent decades and the advent of continuous news coverage on outlets like CNN. Stephen Hess, Distinguished Research Professor of Media and Public Affairs, The George Washington University, explains the nature and impact of this journalistic community.
