There is general agreement today that continued dependence on fossil fuels at current levels of consumption is, overtime unsustainable. Major industrial powers like the United States are beginning to pursue the development of alternative agriculturally based fuel sources. Among environmentally progressive nations Brazil now has a leadership position in the efficient production of ethanol. Marcos Jank explains the Brazilian experience and its implications for the United States.
