The cultural bureaucracy of the Soviet Union was charged with supporting the regimes' political philosophy through a rigorous control of artistic expression. In painting surrealism represented a particular threat. For Soviet bureaucrat Anatoly Pavlovich Sukhanov the responsibility for suppressing surrealism is especially personal and painful.
