Expert Bio

Detlef Nolte is a German political scientist and specialist on Latin America. He is an associated fellow of the German Council on Foreign Affairs and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg. For many years he was director of the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies, and he has been president of the German Latin American Studies Association and vice president of the European Latin American Research Coun- cil. He works regularly as a consultant on Latin American issues. Nolte is also an adjunct professor of political science at the University of Hamburg and an honorary member of the Instituto de Iberoamérica at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He has been a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo, the Catholic University in Santiago de Chile, and FLACSO in Buenos Aires, and his work has been published extensively in international journals. Nolte is columnist for Latinoamérica21, and his contributions have been published in major Latin Ameri- can newspapers. His main areas of research include regional powers and regional orders, Latin American region- alism and regional organizations, Latin America and China, and the relations between Europe and Latin America.
