“Religious Freedom in Transitional, Conflict and Post-Conflict Societies: Legal Issues”

Project Summary

The project aims to investigate the American tradition of understanding, grounding and regulation of religious freedom as a legal value. The main idea is to use the relevant American experience for overcoming contemporary threats to freedom of religion and secularism in Ukraine, in particular: the state’s disproportionate interference with the autonomy of religious associations, unfair balance between religious freedom and other legal values, non-compliance with the principle of secularism, the use of religion as a weapon in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict. The main goal of this comparative legal research is to develop legal mechanisms that will ensure religious neutrality of the state, protect religious rights of individuals and progress the Ukrainian society towards democracy.
