The Ethnolingual Situation in Bashkortostan: A Source for Political and Ethnic Unrest

Project Summary

hypothesis: of the three major languages spoken in Bashkortostan the Russian language obviously enjoys the most advantageous position whereas that of the Bashkir language remains highly vulnerable. Therefore, the common view that the Bahskir language is expanding into all the spheres of social and political life is exaggerated. The governement of Baskortostan should focus on the practical side of the matter by creating the necessary conditions for the equal development of all the languages in question with an ultimat goal of maintaining mulitlingual repertoires.
