James Ryan is the Associate Director of the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at New York University. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania, and is working on a book manuscript on the politics and culture of dissent in Turkey from the founding of the republic to the early Cold War era. He has published peer reviewed articles in the Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association, and The Journal of Urban History, and has occasionally published articles and essays in outlets such as Public Books and Al Jazeera America.
