Dr. Stephanie Pfirman, Barnard College's Hirschorn Professor of Environmental and Applied Sciences serves as co-Chair of the Environmental Science Department. She holds a joint appointment with Columbia University where she is a member of the faculties of the Earth Institute and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and an Adjunct Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Professor Pfirman studies the Arctic, focusing on how sea ice responds to climate change, and how to manage the consequences of a nearly ice free Arctic. She also directs the Polar Learning and Responding Climate Change Education Partnership which is creating novel educational approaches to engage the people in problem solving.
