Macron's Party and Left-Wing Alliance Block Far-Right Majority in French Elections
In France’s recent legislative elections, the country’s left-wing New Popular Front alliance and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist coalition thwarted the anticipated victory of Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally. The turn-around comes only a week after France's far-right National Rally made historic gains in the first round of snap elections. William Drozdiak, a Global Fellow with the Wilson Center’s Global Europe Program, provides an overview of the final election results. He discusses the message the French public has sent with its vote, where Macron stands after his political gamble to call snap elections, and what’s up ahead as France gears up for the Olympics, and a new government now split between three large opposing blocs.
