Political Turmoil in South Korea: President Yoon Taken Into Custody

Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been detained on insurrection charges, with the possibility of an official arrest pending further investigation. His declaration of martial law on December 3 was overturned by Parliament within hours, leading to his impeachment days later. Following weeks of defiance and a dramatic police raid on his presidential compound, Yoon was taken into custody for questioning.

Troy Stangarone, Director of the Wilson Center’s Hyundai Motor-Korea Foundation Center, provides analysis of this moment of political crisis in South Korea. He talks about the impeachment and detention of President Yoon, how he is fighting back, the resilience of democracy in South Korea, and how the impact this crisis is having on South Korea’s ability to engage internationally.
