Israel has declared war on Hamas in response to the militant group's unprecedented attack on the country. In the first few days of fighting more than 1,300 people are estimated to have been killed. The dead include at least 800 Israelis and 500 Palestinians. A reported 130 Israelis are being held hostage under threat of execution.
