The Latest
The US government has officially declared that genocide is being committed in Sudan by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allied militias, marking a significant shift in US policy. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the RSF has engaged in systematic ethnic killings, mass sexual violence, and the deliberate targeting of civilians. RSF leader Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) and several RSF-controlled companies have been sanctioned as a result of the genocide designation.
Ambassador Donald Booth, Co-Chair of the Wilson Center’s Africa Program Sudan Working Group, provides insight on this critical development. He discusses the sanctions on Hemedti’s companies, the atrocities in West Darfur, and the role of external backers, like the UAE, Chad, Egypt, and Russia, in fueling the ongoing conflict.
