OpenBionics: Affordable Prosthetics
About the project
OpenBionics is an open-source project whose main objective is to make affordable prosthetic hands and allow people to reproduce them using affordable materials. The team predicts that the device will cost less than USD 200. A full project description and the CAD files are available at openbionics.org
OpenBionics won 2nd prize from the Hackaday.io hardware development community.
How Does It Work?
“The finger actuation and transmission system follows a bio-inspired design that structurally reproduces the flexion (with tendons driven through low-friction tubes) and extension (using elastomer materials) movements of human fingers. The structure of the finger is constructed with Plexiglas (acrylic) and the flexure joints are implemented with silicone sheets." Source: http://openBionics.org/
