ClosePeru - The Unmaking of Democracy
July 9, 2011
Carlos Basombrio is a Sociologist at the Instituto de Defensa Legal in Lima, Peru.
Alberto Fujimori was elected President of Peru at a time of economic and social crisis. Initially, his administration gained much credit for countering an internal guerilla threat and lowering inflation. In recent years complaints have grown about Fujimori's increasingly authoritarian rule. Management of the recent national election is a case in point with widespread allegations of corruption of the voting process. Carlos Basombrio depicts the threat to democracy that may be arising in Peru.
