Expert Bio

Schuyler Null is the former editor-in-chief of New Security Beat and writer/editor for the Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Program and Maternal Health Initiative.

He writes and produces stories on the connections between the environment, security, population, and international development, and has done reporting from Ethiopia and Malaysia. He is the author of Navigating Complexity: Climate, Migration, and Conflict in a Changing World, the lead editor of Dawn of the Smart City? Perspectives From New York, Ahmedabad, São Paulo, and Beijing, and co-edited Backdraft: The Conflict Potential of Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.  

Schuyler is also a photographer and advised ECSP’s multimedia efforts, including the “Healthy People, Healthy Environment” series of short films and “Friday Podcasts.” He is particularly interested in climate change and conflict research, political demography, and food security, and has written previously on energy consumption in the U.S. military. He holds a BA in Classical Studies from Gettysburg College.
